The Dogwood Ballad

There once was a tree,
With wood of dog...

.... yeah. I'm gonna start over.

There once was a tree,
A Dogwood tree,
That for years brought joy to my family and me.
Up his double trunks we would climb,
For unlike me, a twin had he.

But then came a storm of great magnitude,
With blustering wind, and thundering rude,
And in that storm, the tree's twin toppled.

For a year or two after, the Dogwood stood
Alone in the yard, and mourned his loss.
Bent in sadness, his leaves he lost,
And shivered his limbs in the upcoming frost.
Then in the spring, when the winter was past,
He shook off the frost and had leaves at last.

In the summer, he struggled,
For there was no rain,
Then finally in Fall, to his pleasure,
It came.
He streatched out his bows, to soak in all
The rain he could. But the wind was too strong,
And the gale too long,
And in that night, our Dogwood did fall.
